Since you said much info is okay ----- If it's your friend's first ocean dive - I'd highly recommend boat diving or shore diving and stay away from beach diving in the beginning, unless you're realllly comfortable leading someone on a beach. (in other words - you really don't want to do that). One type of easy shore dive (different from a "beach dive" for all sorts for reasons) is Casino Point on Catalina Island. Good for beginners and more advanced divers. You can take the Catalina Express first thing in the am. Rent your tanks over there.
Also highly recommend the Great Escape (definitely very afloat). added bonus is it's close to PV. The Encore is also good.
