Nitrox is a growing and very viable medium of diving. While you certainly should take a good course, from a qualified instructor, it isn't rocket science either. Wings Stocks out of Ocean Odyessey in Santa Cruz or Andy Voss out of Monetery Beach Dive Center are who I would recommend up your way.
