JC -- Glad to hear that your exxperience hasn't put you off beach diving. It can be challenging but it is also one of the most rewarding and under-rated types of diving (not to mention affordable!)
I highly recommend the 3 Rs classes.
You also might be interested in subscribing to the Sand Eaters e-mail list. We're not a club -- just a group of divers that schedules a beach dive somewhere in Southern California everry Sunday (conditions permitting). There are no meetings, dues, officers etc.
