that's what I think a spare are is perfectly designed for: to comfortably reach your buddy and breathe off his scuba tank.
I don't think a SA is good for much else, but for this application, it is better (because less gear--in the true DIR sense) than pony.
BTW, your cute typo ("pony bottly") gave me the idea for a new name for a pony bottle: combine both into POTTLE :-)
