It has been my practice that when heavy surf is encoutered, you run like a mother f*#=@r. When going through the surf, my BC is empty allowing me to dive under a wave, and my fins are off (never lost a fin either).
When making an entry I'll run out(as fast as I can) untill I get about chest deep. Then I'll throw my fins on and swim out. Exits are in reverse order.
The key point to remeber is when ever possible, RUN!!!
