Ken Kurtis at Reef Seekers Dive shop holds a monthly beach diving class free of charge. He does so, I think, for this very reason. Gaining an understanding of conditions etc etc is a very important aspect of beach diving.
If I'm not mistaken ( but please check with Ken ) I believe he even gives you rental gear free of charge.
There number is 310-652-4990 and they do the beach dive in Redondo Canyon.
