I second that advice. Nothing will trip you up faster (litterally) than putting your fins on too soon during an entry. If you lose your footing in shallow water, you'll never recover fast enough to avoid a wave. The only time I've ever been rolled in the surf was when my rescue dive instructor insisted I keep my fins on at the shoreline and 'crab' my way into the surf. I got knocked down by the first wave that came by and kept getting hit until I could get my fins off and stand up. Ick.
