I'm going to steer clear of the conflict. However,

a 3 person team is really bad for new divers. In our
visibility, coupled with kelp and surge, leads to separated
divers. And often in too many instances, that diver is lost
forever.

For more experienced divers, trios work well. But on
these more marginal conditions, they're a pain to keep working
and lead to a less pleasurable dive. For a simple
dive in the kelp, the gains may not be worth the hassle.
Same reasoning often has me out there by myself.
