I was recently talking to an instructor and asked if he taught buddy breathing in his OW. His answer was no with the reasons thrown in.
I did my OW cert in the north atlantic and these divers are probably not to much different from you west coast types. But i was glad that my instructor was from the old school and made us swim the length of the pool and back while buddy breathing. Haven't practiced it lately but my wife was trained under the same instructor.
One of those little skills that have probably gone by the wayside.
Personally I think class size should be limited to allow for closer supervision of the class by the instructor and not say 20 people in a pool.
I watched a lady in my wifes class struggle through some basic things class after class. By the 4th pool session she quit. It was clear to me that she could not handle the class and there was no way for instructor to give her the detailed attention she needed.
