everyone has their own opinions, and here is mine:

since you've been renting both b.c.'s and regs
and you didn't mention having a problem w/renting
either, i would personally go w/purchasing a b.c.
right now w/the intent to purchase a reg as soon as
i could later on.

the reason why i say buy a b.c. now instead of a reg
is b/c b.c.'s have a fit factor involved, whereas
regs only have a mouthpiece 'size' involved (if you
want to consider that an issue).

i think you will be more comfortable in your own
best fit b.c., rather than having to adapt to
a different brand and a different model each time
you rent, unless you don't have the issue of
renting different types/models of b.c.'s all the time.

really, it's a toss up btwn getting a reg 1st or
a b.c. 1st, but i would think there is more to
b.c.'s than to regs and you may want to cut down
on those variables first so that you can be
as comfy in the water as possible.

on the other hand, if you don't have a problem
w/renting b.c.'s, and if performance is a major
issue w/you, then you may want to plunk down some
$$ and get a well performing, non-rental model of
reg 1st. it all comes down to, i think, what your
immediate 'problems' and needs are and that may help
you to address your q.

whichever you get 1st, best wishes!

kelphead.
