Skelly, if you are mostly doing warm water diving I think you should buy a regulator system first. You can survive with almost any BC in warm water, but you want a regulator that breaths good. Dive resorts have a real problem with maintenance, and their regulators take a beating.
You should also think about buying a computer gage system with your new regulator.
The key is that you have a regulator that breaths good and a gage system that meets your needs.
As far a buying a regulator, stay away from the mail order equipment( most of it is low end, or poorly engineered). The regulator I would buy would be a Scubapro G250 with a Mark 20 first stage. This regulator would give you years of service and is one of the best breathing regulators on the market.

Good Luck,
