JRM - the main difference between PADI and NAUI
(probably the only diff) is that NAUI does some rescue
training and as a result an OW student can go directly
to the full blown rescue course without doing OWII (AOW).
Should OW students get this training. Damn straight they
should. Most will not take rescue, and OW divers are the
ones most likely to need to use it anyway. It's pretty
simple stuff - towing, AR, dropping the weight belt. Virtually
everyone who dies in California does with their belt still on.
Reply private to this if you like: who did you get your
training from? There are very comprehensive instructors and
shops in the BA, and there are ones that turn out divers I have
to finish training to fix all the deficiencies. You have
the advantage of a very experience buddy/wife to do this, many
do not. There lies the failures, in my mind, of PADI.
They continue to make diving as easy to get into as possible,
and this is a bad thing in California waters.
