JC, your post is real time, real life proof of something I've been emphacizing my entire diving career (36 years): THE BUDDY SYSTEM IS LEAST EFFECTIVE WITH DIVERS THAT NEED IT THE MOST...NOVICE BEGINNERS. Despite that, the cert agencies preach the safety of the buddy system as though it were one of God's ten commandments. Your life was saved by a guy on shore, not by your buddy. Learn the skills of self-reliance so the next time your buddy leaves you to tumble in the surf you'll have the confidence and knowhow to pull yourself out of harms way.
