One more reason for a pressure gauge is based on the nature of a pony: The pony is usually not used (breathed off), therefore does not need to be refilled. What doesn't get refilled is not sure to be full when you take it on a dive. So, even the tiny button gauge will tell you whether or not the bottle is full.
