I've also heard that dive shop owners don't belong to the high income category and I appreciate them staying open anyway. But "razor thin profit margins" are new to me. I've heard of quite the contrary. About 100% can't really be called razor thin. What IS causing the low level profit in my opinion is the slow turnover of products and low quantities sold per shop, which is a result of the small market and the plentiful competition.

Maybe one of the dive shop owners can shed a little more light into this scenario.

That being said, I support local dive shops for all the good reasons stated in this thread.
