JRM, I don't really know what you mean by benchmark dives. But if you want to get to the point where you can take some technical training, you are going to have to do lots of rec training first. In NAUI you would need a Master diver rating, a deep diver rating (or equivalent) EAN cert. and 50 logged dives. This will get you to the point where you can take a Technical EAN diver course.
As far as PADI is concerned, what you are looking for in an Instructor is someone who has done alot of tech diving, and can teach from both his experience and the standards.
It doesn't make any difference if they are Padi, Naui, SSI, YMCA, Idea, Andi, IANTD, GUE, or even TDI, it's the Instructor that counts.
