Kelphead:

A few months ago I was at the SF airport going through security and they stopped the guy ahead of me because he was carrying a folding pocket knife.

The guard pulled out a small tape measure an checked the length of the blade. To my surprise they handed back the knife to the guy and let him go through.

I asked the security why they would let someone take a knife on the plane, and wasn't it illegal to carry a knife on the plane? She said it was OK as long as the blade was less than three inches.

I also carry a pocket knife, but I am always careful to pack it into the checked luggage before arriving at the airport. There are far too many "rent-a-cop"s out there with a thirst for excercizing authority over the teeming masses, especially at the airports.
