No diving near San Francisco. You will almost certainly go to Monterey.
Look at www.californiadiveboats.com for dive boats there. Say Silver Prince or Cypress Sea.
April is a pretty chancy time of year. The winds may be blowing and there may be plankton bloom. The water should be at least 50 degrees.
There are some essays about the area diving at www.diver.net/seahunt. Also check the California Coastal Guide - Central for information on the area.
Diving should be fine for your sons, but it is cold and vis will probably be poor that time of year.
You will see all kinds of reef stuff. Kelp should be thin at that time of year. It's a beautiful place.
You could Beach Entry at Cannery Row (very early in the AM to park) or even Monastery Beach near Carmel (fairly hazardous location).
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
