To answer your question, I think independent diving (the way you define it) is risky because no-one will feel responsible for anybody while everyone may feel safe because there are others around.

I like it for the social benefit of being with a group before and after the dive and maybe even during the dive on occasion. But I think each of the divers should consider himself strictly solo and provide self-sufficiency as well as act as if he were all by himself.
