Chris, I still think that my plate and single tank adapter is a tighter fit then the plastic molded backpack (and I have used both).
Plate and wings, are one of the most comfortable BC systems on the market( Double or single tanks).
If divers are looking for a comfortable, funtional system this is one of the best. It is a high dollar system, but you get what you pay for.
Dive equipment for the most part is much better now then what we had in the late 60's and early 70's. In fact the only thing that has stood the test of time is the Jet fin( it is still is the best fin for So. Cal. diving).
You are right, there have been lots of fads, but for the most part the gear today fits better, breaths better, and is more comfortable then anything we had 30 years ago.
