A back plate and wings is a better and more comforatable choice than any jacket style BC.
However for lobster hunting, which I will now be doing until March, the old style back pack has many bennifits over a newer backplate. The most obvious is the ease of taking off the tank, and putting it back on underwater. This is much easier with an old style back pack, than a back plate with crothch strap.
