I may underestimate the strength of a marine plywood construction, but I do know the abuse a dive kayak gets. Just think of dropping a tank/BC onto the floor, tank edge first. This happens all the time and it happens because your mobility on the boat is limited, you want to concentrate on stability and not losing anything, so the chance that a heavy and hard object gets laid down softly every time is slim. The PE material of dive kayaks is extremely tough. Dragging the loaded kayak over rocks into the water and back out just leaves some scratches, no damage. I don't know how forgiving marine plywood is.

For a touring kayak, this may be a valid alternative. For diving, I'm not so sure.
