Open Boat question

I'm a newbie diver, and I've tried four times to go on listed "open boat" trips on a couple of boats. But three out of the four times I've been called with varying degrees of notice that the trip has been cancelled. This is very frustrating, as I have to plan several weeks in advance to schedule work around the trip, and living quite a distance from LA and Ventura it isn't that easy to get down there. My question: Is this a common occurance, and what's the deal?

Why schedule trips in the first place? Does anyone have an estimate on the number of "open boat" trips that actually run? Am I an idiot to keep trying to book them? Is there any boat that seems to run more of its "open boat" trips than another?

I'm going to be down in LA next week on business, and so I booked myself on an "open boat" trip, and had to sell my soul to my boss to get away for it. Cancelled. AAAAarrrrgh!!!
