You are referring to a Jersey * up line*. An up line is used in case you get lost and can't find the anchor line. The idea behind an up line is that you attach a lift bag and shoot a line up. When the bag breaks the surface you tie it off to the wreck and then you have created a instant up line that can be affixed to the wreck/reef and you can surface without doing a floating deco.


I'm talking about your spool ( or as you may have your reel ). See my explanation to EINS about why you should use a spool as opposed to a jon line.
