Listen to Jim, he sounds like he's been through it a number of times. Basically my approach is to have ALL gear on BC slightly inflated, use the regulator, walk out sidways and keep an eye on the waves duck under any that are breaking on you, as soon as it gets deep enough, swim for it with all youve got and get out of the Drop zone. Once safely through then I turn on my back breathing without a regulator or snorkel and kick out to where I want to descend.
On the exit, if the surf is manegable, I remove my fins when I can touch bottom (still keeping on eye on the incoming wave) duck under any that are breaking right on you. If they are large I exit with fins on, anyone that beach dives a lot will at some point have crawled out to dry sand.
