If you've ever been rolled by a wave, don't you find it awkward trying to recover with your fins still on? (for the record, I'm a 'fins-off' kind of gal when it comes to beach diving) I'm been in the situation where I've missed-timed the sets or been too slow to go out deep enough and simply can't recover because I can't stand up with fins on. I've found that if I'm fully geared up - mask on, reg in mouth, bc partially filled - but with fins in hand, I'm able to run like hell past the breakwater, then swim the rest of the way out until I'm out of harms way. Then I can put my fins on at my leisure. When returning, I wait until I'm just beyond the breakers, take my fins off, then kick my way in until I can stand and again and run back to the beach. I've been pretty happy with this method, but I'd be interested in your 2 cents.
