I'm not so sure that holding onto your buddy is such a good idea. I would guess that more often than not a buddy could push or pull you over with him by doing so.
My technique of choice is to back out looking over the inside shoulder towards your buddy at the oncomming surf. Stay about arms distance referencing one another and not v'ing out from one another.
If your buddy were to become unstable and fall over, do as they have done and lay down and "HOTEL ALPHA" beyond the surf zone. This technique works best with all your gear in place.
