Without going into further debate, I believe that experienced divers can survive 100% of dives that go as planned. However, not all 100% of dives go as planned. And that's where help is crucial.

My humble opinion is that a self-sufficient diver is worth more than a buddy who is not playing his role seriously. But it is better to look at it this way: a well trained and well oiled buddy team has a much higher chance to solve and survive serious problems than even the most self-sufficient solo diver.
