Two things:

I think you meant to say that the proper gliding
technique while diving is by swimming in a horizontal
position, ie., parallel to the ocean floor.

Also, the arguement against the back inflated rigs
is that they tilt the diver face down at the surface.
The jacket style bc's fully inflate around the torso
area this keeping the divers head out of the water.

The bc keel is used to help offset the back inflated
tendency of floating an unconscious diver face down by
adding weight to the tank thus providing a face up
orientation at the surface.
