It all depends on how long you plan to dive. It doesn't matter how many tanks you have to rent to "come out even". That could take months or a year or two. I plan on diving for many years to come. I own three sets of LP steel doubles and a single LP steel 120. If I go on a commercial boat, I'm guaranteed a good fill. With HP, you may get as low as 80% filled (2800psi in a tank rated for 3500). As far as having to "lug" them around, you have to do the same with rentals and if you don't make it back to the shop in time, you will pay for an additional day's rental. If you only plan on doing a few dives a year or travelling away from home for most of your dives, by all means, rent.
