The lack of skills to attain such a rating is scarey. On a much earlier post I mentioned a friend who became a rescue diver, under PADI, with less then a dozen dives. I took him on his first, and only, still, non-class dives the weekend before he got certified. While this would normaly bother me, this bright 17 year old, has been a Life Gaurd, which greatly helps. But still, something seems wrong. The lack of basic training, even in basic open water, to me, is where the greatest danger to divers today comes from. I took a basic open water in 1970, dove for several years then stoped. I took another basic class in 1999, even tho I wasn't required to, but because I knew I had changed and so had much of the equipment. I felt this latest class of much to easy, for as dangerious as diving is. Mores the pity, if this is progress.
