Just to clarify, I didn't start night solo diving recently. Every dive from my 12th-current(35) have been night time solo.
I do it because I'm comfortable doing it. I have a very good mentor, and several other extremely experienced divers that I dive with. I've got a cousin who never got comfortable doing it, and he was getting his dive master cert at the time.
Safety is relative. If you stay within your comfort level, you're on the right track. I'm a long time lurker, and I always skip right over these solo vs buddy debates. The reason for my post was to defend PADI.
Our lives have enough red tape as it is.
