I do it with an old fashiond backpack, w/o crotch strap all the time. I often tak the pack off to get at bugs. Then put it back on once I've baged the critter.
The crotch strap would make things more difficult, since the wieght belt has to go over the crotch strap. If you don't use the crotch strap, you can remove and don the back pack with out ever removing your wieght belt.
