John;

Great summary-particularly regarding the problems associated with elevated PO2's. Good reasons to avoid exertion and CO2 production at higher PO2's. Put another way, adjust PO2's downward and PHe's up for dives where you're going to swing a sledge! The studies in Bennet & Elliot point to elevated CO2 levels in the presence of high PO2's-for many of the reasons you mentioned. The human studies were conducted with divers performing work. The problem appears less severe if exertion is kept low and effective ventilation is maintained.
