Before I relocated to California, I only did tropical diving. My first kelp dive took place near Cape Town, South Africa. Same conditions. Only, my rented wetsuit was kind of too thin (for me) and the beach exit over large boulders almost exhausted me to collapse. I, too, was not prepared for what I got into, but I must say, I had a very memorable (night) dive and my first ever sea lion encounter.
Maybe I should have just asked what it is going to be like instead of being so ignorant and thinking it would be about the same as I was used to and would be OK because I went with a local dive guide.
