Maybe I read it different than it was meant, but it sounded to me like you said the 60's were better than today--less accidents (your claim).
That claim was demounted (virtually) by Ken's numbers. Kelphead pointed in the same direction but didn't have the numbers to support it.
KISS as an attitude would make sense if a diver had had the choice to use more gear than you described. Limiting to this outfit was not by choice but by short supply: there was nothing else to chose from. At least that's MHO.
