I have a friend who was used to warmer water and milder conditions who nearly blew a gasket getting into the water here in CA. Says they'll never dive here again only in tropical places. I've never had anything else to dive in, so I'm fine. I think its all a matter of perspective. It can be exhausting, hitting the cold water and wearing tons more weight in an inflexible suit - but plenty of people do it just fine.
