On a boat dive, it should be easy to get someone to pick your weights up for you. My record is retrieving 4 weight belts in one day. It was last year on the Liberty and one belt was dropped twice. Ok, so that guy dropped his by accident (non-giant stride and NAAA -- No Ass At All) twice before he (not a student either) got a grip on how to jump in!

But I do not fear the loss since I can always send somebody down or go back later. I have had a couple of times when my hand was on the release in case things did not get resolved. Weight belts or packs can be replaced. No matter what my wife says, I cannot be replaced.
