Your "GENERAL rule of thumb" fits me exactly: 180 lbs, DUI weight harness with 5 lbs in each of four ditchable pockets, two of which are independent of the other two, and 2, 2 pounders attached to the rear of the waist harness. Total weights with my dry suit: 24 lbs. Add my steel 120 and AL 40 pony and I'm slightly overweighted. Oh, almost forgot: 1 1/2 pound ankle weight on each ankle. At depth, no air in my BC, only in the suit. Works for me, a recreational wreck diver. BTW, when I snorkel scrub the bottom of my 6' deep fresh water pool in just swim trunks I need an 18 pound belt to stay down! Some of us are more naturally buoyant than others.
