Spear guns have an advantage over pole spears because they have multiple bands and much more penetration power.
A disadvantage of a spear gun is that it takes a long time to reload.
For rockfish, cabezon, or lingcod either a pole spear or a spear gun work fine, with a pole spear being superior for rockfish becasue
of the short reload time.
For halibut, calico bass, yellowtail, barracuda, bonita a spear gun is preferable because of the greater range.
I normally use a rock point on my pole spear. I always use break away heads on my guns.
