There are many people certified as instructors that are downright scary.
On a recent trip to Santa Barbara Island I worked as a DM, there was a pair of PADI instructors that needed to be rescued every dive because they did not know how to deal with a mild current.
Last year on a trip to Tanner bank I had to rescue a advanced student, because her instructor was busy with his video equipment. Tanner is not the place for a students first "advanced" dive!
If you talk with the captain of almost any dive boat, they have many stories of instructors who can not dive themselves, much less teach others.
It has always been my contention certification level is almost meaningless. Experience is far more important.
