That was actually sort of my point, that he was following a permanent line ("main" line) but that it didn't sound like he was running his own reel, which might have made it easier to trace his route.

I probably wasn't clear enough when I posted my question. Thanks for clearing it up.

I have seen similar lines years ago (late 70s) when I used to dive in some of the north/central Florida springs. I seem to recall one that runs from Peacock Slough over to Pothole Sink, and one that starts down in the Colessium at Orange Grove Sink and goes to another sinkhole (whose name I can't recall). Always seemed to me that these types of permanent lines could prove tempting to the untrained diver and make it seem safe to do a traverse that the non-cave-certified diver would be ill-prepared to do.
