Frank,

If you accept the theory that Nitrogen's the enemy, then you can understand why JW suggests the inclusion of Helium for all diving depths-even under 100fsw. The original intended benefit of Nitrox was to eliminate some Nitrogen from the breathing mix; ie: EAN32 has 11% less Nitrogen in the gas. Experience has taught us that elevated 02 levels are dangerous at depth and can damage lungs, so the harmless inert gas Helium is added to further lower the percentage of the evil Nitrogen in your breathing gas. The benefits? more of what Nitrox was intended to do by simply eliminating more Nitrogen.
