I think you're talking about the rock boots that DUI sells. IMO the best reason for those (over the attached boots) was demonstrated in the pool at Pacific Wilderness last week in a dry suit class. One of the students was wearing a rental drysuit that was a) slightly long and b) had attached boots that were a little too big for his feet. (another shop had rented him the drysuit with no training and sloppy fitting.) During the inverted exercise, the attached boots filled w/air and popped the fins off the suit and the boots mostly off his feet. This could have been a disaster in deep water because without fins few divers could right themselves, and a pop up would result. With rock boots and maybe gaiters, the problem of "inflatable" feet & legs is solved.
