(WSVN) The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the apparent drowning death of a scuba diver, who died in the ocean off Pompano Beach Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Donna Hart, 45, was one of a group of 25 diving enthusiasts from Kissimmee. The group arranged to meet in Pompano Beach for an open ocean dive aboard the boat "Aqua View."
Hart was reportedly experienced, having made 30 dives, although she had not been active for the past two years.

Hart and another diver descended 87 feet to the ocean floor and were exploring the sunken boat "Captain Dan." Her equipment became caught on the wreck and she panicked, according to her dive buddy, and she pulled off her mask and regulator. The other diver brought her to the surface, but she was dead by the time she completed her ascent.

A police officer and an Emergency Medical Technician (part of the dive group) were aboard the dive boat and immediately started performing CPR, but they could not revive the lifeless woman. A BSO Marine Unit boat was summoned via the dive boat's VHF radio and the responding deputy rushed her to the 14th street dock in Pompano Beach, where she was declared dead by paramedics.

Hart was transported to the Broward Medical Examiner's office where an autopsy will be performed to officially establish the cause of death, believed to be accidental drowning.
