Frank;

Your points on self-sufficiency are of course well taken. Self-sufficiency should be taught better to new divers and reinforced throughout a diving career. Self-sufficiency and solo diving are not the same, however. Two self-sufficient divers diving as a team are much safer than one self-sufficient diver alone. Any diver who is not self-sufficient is a liability. PADI uses the buddy system as an excuse to short change the curriculum on self-sufficiency resulting in the potential for two non-self-sufficient divers diving together. This is known as a cluster f@ck.
