You are absolutely right, extra insulation means extra weight if everything else is equal.

And the arguement is circular. The point I make is that you should enter the circle at the point of "sufficient high quality insulation to stay warm throughout the dive." then let the rest follow.

Eins complained of cold. The solution is either more insulation or better insulation. The best insulation is a vacuum but my vacuum jacket is being studied by NASA and so is unavailable. The aknowledged best practical insulation is (I believe) thinsulate, so once the proper weight (thickness) of thinsulate is found, then add enough gas to prevent pinch, and enough weight to sink the gas (just be sure all the weight is ditchable.)
