He probably meant La Jolla Shores, rather than La Jolla Cove. He was right in that you really should see it if you can.
In typical years, you'll get squid runs at La Jolla Shores from November through February, with December and January being the most probable. Conditions have been atypical recently. There were occasional squid runs throughout the year, including a big one about two months ago. Bat rays everywhere.
I was out on Tuesday evening to see whether the squid were running. Although they weren't running then, there were some old egg casings suggesting that there may have been a small run one or two weeks ago.
