Try staying at the hotels in Goleta. It's just 10 miles from downtown Santa Barbara, and costs a lot less. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn on Calle Real several times. You can get to it from either the Patterson Street exit or the Fairview exit.
If you want to stay closer to Santa Barbara, try the Pepper Tree Inn at Five Points/La Cumbra shopping mall area. I've stayed there many times on business, and it is OK.
Hotels downtown tend to be pricey. Some insist that you stay two days if you stay on a Saturday. Hotels in Goleta aren't doing that, last time I checked.
If the prices in Santa Barbara are too high for you, try Buellton. Prices should be cheaper there although it is a 45 minute or so drive from downtown Santa Barbara.
