List,

In California there are 32 offshore oil platforms scheduled for decommission within the next decade. In an ongoing effort to save these thriving marine habitats, State Senator Dede Alpert(D-Conorado) has introduced Senate Bill 241. This legislation would establish a new California Endowment for Marine Preservation. The bill would require each owner and operator of these oil platforms to donate a substantial sum to this new Marine Preservation Endowment Fund. The Fund would become a permanent source of funding for projects that will enhance the quality, use, and enjoyment of our open costal marine resources for years to come-all at no expense to taxpayers.

The bill goes to it's first committee hearing within the next few weeks and it will be important for supporters to voice their support to their State Representitives.

An organization called Coalition For Enhanced Marine Resources is leading a support drive. They will have their web site operational later this week and you will be able to access the entire bill. the site will be: www.preservereefs.org. Their phone is (800) 604-5007.
